An Evening Shared: BBQ, Wine, and Waterfront Vibes.
For us, New Year's Eve is all about gathering the people who matter most. The night kicks off back at base, firing up the dual BBQs in the shared pool house, opening a spectacular bottle of Northland wine, and putting the world to rights over a few cold beers. As the evening warms up, the group naturally splits to enjoy the best of the town. Because Crab Shack Cottage sits just a flat 300-metre stroll from the heart of the village, our older 'kids' can easily wander into town independently to sample the incredible nightlife. From craft beers on the deck to premium waterfront cocktails at iconic historic neighbors like The Duke of Marlborough Hotel or a late espresso at the Hell Hole Café, the atmosphere along the strand is electric.
The Midnight Tradition: The Russell Wharf Jump & Paihia Fireworks
Just before the clock strikes twelve, everyone converges on the historic Russell Wharf. The energy here is unforgettable. Locals and visitors line the edge under the summer night sky, and the moment midnight hits, the brave launch themselves into the warm ocean waters for the traditional New Year's midnight wharf jump! (Check out our short video clip below to see the splash!) From your vantage point on the wharf, look directly across the pristine, moonlit bay toward the twinkling lights of Paihia. As the final countdown finishes, the spectacular Paihia midnight fireworks display erupts over the water, lighting up the entire harbour in an unforgettable show.
